From September 2007 Loughborough College have offered a course called the Chronic Respiratory Disease Exercise Instructor Course. It is an innovative distance learning course for fitness instructors who are looking to develop their knowledge of safe and effective exercise specifically for those with respiratory disease.
The BLF provides a limited number of bursaries to fitness instructors taking this course. The bursary covers the course fees of £275 and travel expenses to and from the contact days (up to £135).
The course has been written and reviewed by a range of clinicians working in the field and provides an up to date insight into many areas including:
- The physiology and pathology of lung disease
- Medication and oxygen therapy
- Responses to exercise in patients with lung disease
- Exercise prescription
- Managing breathlessness
- Emergency procedures and monitoring for deterioration
- Considerations for other conditions common in this population
- Referral pathways
- Programme evaluation
As the course is distance learning you will be sent course materials to complete and return by post or fax within a given timeframe. You will also be required to attend one contact day and a half day exam at a centre at either Leicester, Loughborough or South Wales. Recipients of the BLF bursary will have their travel expenses reimbursed. The course lasts approximately 12 weeks and you will be assigned a tutor who will support you throughout the course.
