Members give up their time voluntarily to assess grant applications received. They must declare any interests they have in any of the applications and not take part in the review of these. During their three year term of office, members can only be awarded one grant but will not be present during the review of this application. The Chair cannot be awarded a grant during her/his term of office. All preliminary applications are evaluated by this Committee.
External peer review
Following short-listing of successful pre-applicants, full Project Grant and Research Fellowship applications are evaluated by an external peer review process that involves leading respiratory experts from the UK and worldwide.
Lay evaluation
The ‘lay sections' of full grant applications are also evaluated by a selection of non-scientists from the British Lung Foundation's Board of Trustees . Their job is to assess how well the applicant can communicate the importance of their proposed study for people living with lung disease. This also allows us to evaluate the applicant's ability to explain their ideas to a non-scientist. This helps us to fund scientists who are able to communicate about their research to all of our supporters.
