Brian Reynolds was diagnosed 18 months ago with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). His symptoms were unusual, and began first with throat pain. After having numerous scans the doctors discovered he also had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and a blocked main artery.
Brian’s wife Patricia first noticed the signs of OSA and became increasingly concerned about Brian’s loud snoring at night time. She also worried about the bouts of stopping breathing that would happen up to 25 seconds at a time during the night. Because Brian’s snoring was so loud she had to move into a separate bedroom. Brian’s wife was so concerned that she and Brian went to see their consultant and he arranged for Brian to have a sleep study at home. As a result Brian was diagnosed with OSA.
Brian received treatment at St. Peters in Chertsey. The medical staff in the lung clinic were very thorough and understanding about his condition.
Nowadays, Brian uses a CPAP machine, which he says works well and has helped him an enormous amount. In particular, it provides re-assurance that he can breathe during his sleep, allowing him to sleep more soundly without waking up during the night and feeling exhausted the next day. He says the only problem he has with the CPAP is that sometimes the mask dislodges when he turns over in bed. However, this is a minor inconvenience compared with the benefits the CPAP machine has provided him with.
