The British Lung Foundation’s Chief Executive Dame Helena Shovelton was awarded the British Thoracic Society Medal today. The medal was awarded because Shovelton has “indefatigably championed the cause of people who have lung diseases and their carers”, a BTS statement said. Shovelton has been Chief Executive of the BLF since 2002.
Speaking about the award, Shovelton said:
“I am delighted to accept this award from the British Thoracic Society, our partners in the fight against lung disease. For many years respiratory illness has been an invisible disease in this country, and it has been a considerable challenge to push it to the top of the agenda. I am, however, heartened by the progress that has been made so far and look forward to lung disease being given more prominence in the future.”
Peter Dolphin, Chairman of the British Lung Foundation said:
“This award is a reflection of Helena’s extraordinary effort over a number of years in representing the concerns and needs of those living with respiratory illness. A particular achievement was her influence in the establishment of an outcomes strategy for COPD and Asthma, a move which will have a profoundly positive influence on people living with those conditions.”
