On Friday, Alex Cunningham MP was due to give his second reading of the ten minute rule bill, which will legislate against smoking in cars with children. Unfortunately, the bill was too far down the list of order for debate and there wasn’t enough time for it to be read.
This now means this bill won’t proceed any further however this isn’t the end of the campaign! The British Lung Foundation will continue to work with Alex Cunningham MP, the Government, MPs and Peers from all parties to ensure that children in England are protected against cigarette smoke in the car.
Clare Cox, Director of Communications at the British Lung Foundation said:
“While it is disappointing that the second reading of Alex Cunningham’s Ten Minute Rule Bill did not go ahead today, we are encouraged by the attention now being devoted by politicians from all parties to protecting children from passive smoke.
“We will continue to work with the Government on this issue and look forward to their passive smoking awareness campaign launching this spring and to seeing the impact this will have on children’s health.”
