Workplaces deemed high risk

Coal MinerWorkplace environments that could pose a risk to lung health are those where employees are exposed to substances such as dust, strong chemicals and toxicants and other fine particles that could irritate the respiratory system.

These include:

  • Mining - repeated exposure to and inhalation of coal dust can be a factor in respiratory illness and many COPD hotspots around the UK are ex-mining areas
  • Textiles - breathing in small fibres and particles can lead to irritation of the airways and areas of the country that had large textile industries now have high levels of COPD
  • Firefighting - firefighters may be at risk of respiratory illness due to exposure to toxicants and combusting elements
  • Workplaces where chemicals and/or small particles can be breathed in, such as bakeries, paint manufacturers, engineering etc.
