How can the BLF help?

The BLF has years of experience in running successful lung testing and awareness-raising events in the community and in workplaces. The aims and objectives of the workplace events are:

  • A Lung TestTo educate people about what COPD is and to raise awareness of the early warning signs
  • To reduce the impact of COPD in line with government policy
  • To encourage people to stop smoking and to signpost people to healthcare services
  • To promote greater access to lung function testing
  • To assist employers in meeting their occupational health obligations

What do the events look like?

Our team can customise the event to fit with an organisation's operational needs. However a typical event involves:

  • Testing EventPosters and leaflets to help the employer advertise the event in advance
  • Lung testing using the latest spirometry equipment
  • Respiratory specialists on hand to answer questions and ensure demand is met
  • Time slots booked in advance by employees if desired
  • Smoking cessation representation on hand with advice
  • Goody bags of leaflets and promotional materials (pens, post-it notes etc)

The lung function tests indicate if someone has poor lung function which should be investigated further. In these cases the employee is given a letter of referral to take to his/her GP. The test also indicates the employee's 'lung age' - an important motivational tool in encourging people to look after their lungs.

After the event we contact all those tested and provide a comprehensive report detailing results and actions for the organisation to take in order to reduce absenteeism from respiratory conditions in the future.
