The British Lung Foundation (BLF) and NHS Hull held a ‘Love Your Lungs’ campaign throughout February 2010 to alert Hull residents to the symptoms of a common lung disease called COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
Why Hull?
Hull was targeted after research by the BLF showed that people in Hull are 55% more likely to be admitted to hospital with COPD than the UK average, making it the second hotspot in the UK.
The BLF were keen to reach people who are unaware of the early symptoms, which include breathlessness and a persistent cough, often with phlegm. To help people identify symptoms and find out whether they have a problem, the ‘Love Your Lungs’ campaign ran four events offering members of the public free lung function tests.
Key statistics – Lung Function Testing Events
790 residents of Hull received a free lung function test
183 residents (23%) were advised to visit their GP for a follow up consultation
Key Statistics – Evaluation
76% of those asked felt the event had increased their awareness of COPD
49% felt the events had impacted their day to day behaviour
35% of those surveyed who were referred were diagnosed with COPD
