Our new Patient Education Programme gives patients and carers a clear and detailed understanding of COPD and of self management, supporting them to become experts in their own care to put them in control and improve their quality of life.
Our programme aims to:
- Give patients a clear and detailed understanding of COPD
- Teach patients methods of self-management and ways in which they can personally control their illness
- Highlight local and regional support services
- Increase confidence around living with COPD
- Improve quality of life through self-management
A series of relaxed and interactive workshops provide participants with a positive and encouraging outlook towards COPD. The workshops, which are run by BLF staff members, BLF nurses and a local clinician and physiotherapist (sourced by the BLF) cover the following areas:
- What is COPD?
- Self Management of COPD (Physical, Emotional, Medical & Lifestyle)
- Exercise and COPD
- Presentation on BLF support services
- Talk from a Breathe Easy member (a patient living with COPD)
- Presentation on local services
Proactive patient education can have a positive impact on clinical outcomes and can reduce emergency service use.
