Stephen Spiro is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine and was Head of Department at University College London Hospitals until retiring from the NHS in December 2008. He is now an Honorary Consultant Physician at UCLH and The Royal Brompton Hospitals, London. He started his consultant career with a joint appointment at the Brompton and University College Hospitals in 1977. He moved full time to UCH in 1993 to become Clinical Director of Medicine and then Medical Director, until 2002.
He has a long term interest in lung cancer and helped form the London Lung Cancer Group, which has run multi-centre clinical trials in this disease for more than 30 years. He received a large CR UK grant to look at screening in high-risk individuals.
He has also carried out much research in respiratory physiology and sleep disordered breathing. He is now working on improving undergraduate teaching at UCLH, continuing research, seeing private patients and working for the BLF.
His outside interests include lots of tennis, fly fishing and hoping Arsenal will do better. He and his wife enjoy classical music, theatre and opera as well as supporting the Arts. They have three sons and three grandchildren.
